Wister Dove Hunting

Just wanted clarification on regulations for dove hunting at Wister on Sept 1st. I know a few of the Northern units (513A for example) have been planted with wheat, and just wanted to know if a Type A pass is req. for dove. Moreover, is there a check in process required at the head quarters, with assigned fields, or is it a park and shoot free for all?

On a side note, I had to laugh at my avatar photo. It's been a few, no many years, since i've been on the forum. My Little Raahauge's Duck Club helper is now grown and in the The Air Force.

HCPHARM, you don't need Type A pass to hunt Wister. But you do have to sign in at the "Refuge Check In" kiosk near the Check Station. The kiosk is located on Davis Rd just past the Check Station parking lot on the left hand side of the road. You need to sign in all people with you; I think you have to put vehicle license number too ! You must sign out upon leaving so the staff or Wardens know you have left the refuge. There are spots on the refuge where hunting is not allowed. Not sure of all of them; but I know you cannot hunt near the Check Station, Refuge Office/Yard, and Staff Housing. There is no assigned fields or spots; it is first come first serve on the refuge. Which doesn't mean much anymore !! LOL !! You can find a great spot that looks promising 2 hours before LST and some clown will come and set up 20 feet away 10 minutes before LST.
Sadly too many hunters have never been taught respect ! Good luck !!

And that's one reason we are not going to Yuma for the opener. Seems that the CA lead ban drove a whole lot of CA shooters (not hunters) to AZ last year, and too many of them were complete jerks. No hunting etiquette, no respect for the birds, no respect for the land owners, unsafe gun handling, kids running around unsupervised, etc. Just not worth the aggravation.

Unfortunately, this territory now needs a pass for duck hunting and shooting there has become paid.

"has become paid".....huh???

But from the good news, long-range shooting now does not require a special permit in this area.

Pretty sure "long-range shooting" is not allowed at Wister.

I'm pretty sure a lot of duck and dove hunters shoot long range all the time..
