I have been fishing since I was big enough to handle a cane pole. I grew up in Michigan fishing lakes and streams. Since I left home, I have added lots of ocean fishing. I still go out in regular boats once in a while but for the last 5 years, I have been mainly fishing from kayaks. Both fresh and salt water. Catching a 10 lbs. fish from a kayak is a whole different experience from catching the same fish from a boat or the shore.
My wife and I go to Mexico every year and kayak fish for Tuna, Dorado, Pargo, Trigger fish, Rooster fish and whatever else we can.
This is my latest rig. 15' ft long. 4 pole holder on the yak plus 2 on the seat. Sonar, anchor, gaf, billy club, net and tons of storage. About the only thing I need to add is a VHF radio and a bait tank.

I ocean fish mostly out of San Diego south into Mexican waters and off of Newport and Huntington Beach. Horseshoe Kelp. Fishied out of Dana point on occasion. Fish for all the SoCal species.

Most of my fishing is done from the channel islands to baja. During the winter I target rockfish, summer I'm chasing bass, cuda, yellowtail and albies, the fall I'm after yellowfins, and hopefully this spring I'll be getting my first WSB.

Spend most of my time fishing the Channel Islands on my Davis fish of choice are WSB and the flatties. When the albies show off Morro I am there as well. More to come.

No matter how many times I've tried, I still turn green in the open ocean, so I stick to S.D. Bay. or just out on the kelp beds.

I target Sand bass, Kelp Bass, Spotted Bay Bass, and the flatties.

I use hand poured WK's in my own colors, with 3/4 ounce hand poured lead heads.

Hey JDC. My boss has a 42 foot Carver in a slip in SD harbor. We are looking for somone that knows the local waters for sand bass, cuda's, flatties, etc. Maybe this summer we can get together for a trip? He loves to catch the bass.

Heck yeah!

I'm going to start going down in my row boat probably next month and fish the bay. By summer I should have it pretty well hooked up.

About 4 years ago 3 of us got into a patch of flatties in the bay. Three hookups at the same time, all legal, mine was the largest and probably went 30lbs. I gaffed the other two and got them in the boat while leaving mine deep so I could get help. Brought it up, my brother swung the gaff once- twice- three times... and missed all three...

I was reaching to take the gaff from him and he wrapped my line around his hand 4" above the jig..

I yelled NOOOOOO--- SNAP!

I coulda gaffed him.

I'll fish for anything at least once. This year I fished for bass, kokenee, rock fish, sturgeon, shark, tuna, dungeness crab, striped bass, and halibut. Did pretty good.

I grew up fishing warm water out of Louisiana. There I fished for flounder, red fish, and speckle trout. We also shrimped some.

I also started fishing when I was old enough to hold onto a rod. When I was a kid I worked in a tackle shop building fishing rods and then worked a couple summers on sportboats. I used to competitive bass fish a little but my real passion is ocean fishing off Southern California and Mexico. Tuna are my favorite especially Albacore... because I love to BBQ them!! Because of my addiction to bowhunting I don't fish as much anymore. I still build rods as a hobby. Ed F

Been fishing since I could walk. Cut my teeth on rainbows in Alberta, Canada. Spent most of my youth chasing grouper and anything else that swam off of Singapore. Caught salmon, stripers, steelhead, rockfish, halibut and trout when I lived in Norcal.

Now I target anything that swims in SoCal. I chase fish above and below the water, whether it be with rod and reel or spearguns. I still make the trek to fish trout at my mom's in MT. I've worked on boats and still occasionally deckhand to help out.

Chaum, That is badass. I am so afraid that if I ever went spearfishing... I'd quit bowhunting. That's like the best of both worlds. I watch that show Offshore Adventures all the time and would love to hunt underwater. Never caught an Opha, nice one! Really cool, thanks for sharing. Ed F

It's addictive to say the least. Paddy hopping is a lot of fun. You just have to get used to leaving the safety of the boat, entering the food chain and not letting the fact that there is over a thousand feet of water between you and the bottom bother you... :D

Spearfishing offshore and hunting the kelp beds inshore are what keeps me sane in between waterfowl seasons. One of the benefits from spearfishing is I've learned so much more about fish and their behaviors from watching them underwater. I truly think it's made me a better fisherman.
