I started shooting my bow a little more frequently again a few weeks ago. My cousin had purchased a bow about the same time as me a few years ago and he mentioned he is getting his string replaced this week. I got to thinking my bow has had a issue for about a year now with fish tailing arrows I had it in 2 shops changed a couple hundred dollars in things to have the same problems. So yesterday I broke down and took my bow into a 3rd shop to have it looked at maybe different opinion. And little closer to my work. They tried changing the slide guide I believe it's called to get more fletching clearance it's now on its 3 rd one. Then he changed the knocking point slightly raised it. Made a few adjustments and got it to paper test clean. He asked how old my string is I told him I'd say at least a few years old. Now I thought my string was in great condition it looked really good to me but he suggested I change it. So I went ahead and left the bow to be worked on. Now this brings to mind how often are you changing out your string? What other maintenance are you doing to your compound bow and how often? This is my first bow it shot really good when I first got it. Killed 2 deer first 3 months I owned it. It just hasn't shot the same this last year. I take great care of it it's been stored in a case. Never been dropped. Hopefully a new string and tune will help it.

I change cables and strings every other year or sooner(if one gets a nic or something) whether they need it or not. I'm not an expert on bows but changing them gives me a little peace of mind knowing the strings are new. Also if you change them before they need it you have an extra set of strings to take with you on hunts in case you damage the ones on the bow.

My bow was not staying in tune at all and I shot it a lot this year. Had new strings and cables put on (best to do them both at the same time so they stretch together over time) a few weeks ago and it is like a brand new bow! Made a big difference for me.

Every spring... regardless of what they look like. Mine get a lot of use and it's good insurance. You invest a lot of time and money in to your season... why take a chance. This is just me... I have a press and do all of my own bow work. Ed F

I know this guy that does strings for great prices, but he ships fast and gives great customer service... Not what you are looking for if you are used to dealing and paying for WC.

If you are asking when to change strings, it is past time to do so.

So dummy me, I see this topic and forget that I have been wanting/ needing to do this (shows how much I shoot the dern thing). I know next to nothing about bows other than how to send an arrow downrange with some degree of accuracy.

that being said what is the typical turn around time for a shop to do this? Can't call the local shops (hitech/ OC/ bass pro?) from work right now, but will when I get home. Ideally I'd like to get this done by next Thursday (21st)

is that reasonable or will I be laughed at?

not that unreasonable... but i surely wouldnt go to OC or Hitech.... if you need some help id be glad to hook ya up....im up in Victorville....

depending on bow you may be able to walk in a shop and them have a set of WC on the shelf for it, but then your talking $125 or maybe more depending to get them and have them slap it on....

I'm lucky to have a local guy build my strings and cables for me, he replaces them at no cost, hell of a nice guy. He's even showed me how to make them, not sure if I'm up to that yet.
