Tough call honestly what I would do. Me personally knowing I was a "pet" deer would weigh more on me. I may opt to pursue a truly "wild" buck.

Makes me think of the elk on Tejon that were originally escapees. Or our chukar that are not native, and the list goes on. After how many breeding do we consider something assimilated or "wild".

To notify the high fence operation and have them come and catch their deer would ruin my hunting grounds. That would not. If I had a shot opp at the deer during the season I would take it. Not sure how the meat would taste (steroids or genetics, not sure how they get the racks that big)...but I would not pass the opportunity. I do like how the kid will leave the tag on the ear, that is good on him. If I was not able to take the deer during the season and the high fence operation wanted to pay a reward, I would let them come and catch their pet. Otherwise...let the DNA go free.

It's a game animal in season on land that the kid was allowed to hunt, so fair game as far as I can tell from the link. I have to wonder if any of the livestock laws that apply to animals like branded/tagged cattle would apply in this case.

High fenced/canned operations are not hunting.

Knowing the Buck was in the area before hand, I'd check the laws on it first. I have know idea what they are but if it was legal I'd smoke it in a heartbeat.

I wonder what the locals think of the high fence operations?......As a good neighbor, the owners of the deer could have been contacted when it was spotted (surprised that they don't chip/radio them). No different than when cows get loose here locally. We call the owners. This deer had an ear tag (not that it needed it).....Can't blame the kid, but whoever owned the land probably didn't score any points with the guy that had this high fence opp next door.

Also, I don't know anything about how the animals act on high fence properties. Just what I see on TV.....What I do see is mostly animals that act fairly wild. The one thing I do see is feeders and shooting under them is really not hunting. It doesn't state how long this animal was loose. If the animal was out for an extended period of time. Maybe he became more wild.....Either way, I wouldn't blame the kid regardless how much it was worth.

ps.....With Hatch a Texian and all.......I would like his take on this. Since Texas has a lot of this kind of SHOOTING.

exactly what jaime said...[he actually hunts}...id of smoked him in a heartbeat and have in the past..ear tag or not..KAPOOW! i would also invite any duck shooter to try thier luck on a so called [high fence operation}..there are some deemed the phag show..those are the ones that are about 100 acres with 14 feeders,,the bucks come in over night of the truck and bamm..$10,000 phat johhny is drinkng at the bar...then there are those that are 7+ thousand arces..you,ll never see a fence..and rarely see a deer..if your phat..lazy and out of shape..you can choose to sit in a box blind and wait it out over a corn feeder..if you want to HUNT..you can take off on foot like the professional hard core hunters on t.v. and make it any way you want..either way..it really is up to the individual on how he wants to spend his money..and either way..id be happy to take it!! this rosie elk wandered off an ajacent property 18,000 acres of ajacent property..he had about 700 yards to get back on his property......he stepped in front of the wrong mammal hunter KAPOOW!!..45 dollar exotic license...cheapest elk a guy will ever shoot...and tasty..

Its like shooting a banded duck, you hang the ear tags on your grunt tube lanyard to show how hard core you are.

I'd thump it, then send a bill for damages occurred.

Really. You don't maintain your fences allowing your most valued livestock lose then complain when it disappears.

Ya... all those "Canned" hunts should know that their containment of animals is solely on them.
Steve, I agree that when a cow gets out we call the owner, but the difference is, it's not "Open Cow Season" on this side of the fence, otherwise there would be a lot fewer phone calls and a lot more gut piles.

I'd crush it in a heartbeat if given the chance. I wouldn't consider it a great accomplishment, though. I've caught giant Alpers out of the eastern sierra, most of the time I don't even take pictures of them.

Tuffs,

I was only using the cow as an example of being a good neighbor......It states they (landowner & kid) knew the deer had escaped.....So, they knew it was out there. And were aware of it's value to the owners.....Again, I know little about high fence operations. Do they grow these bucks from fawns. I do know they feed them supplements and such. Seems very similar to raising a prime bull to me.

Don't believe I would've shot it (something about the green tag in the ear turns me off)........ Well, unless the owner of the deer was a jackass.

19k for a deer? No doubt, dead deer. I would have then sent them a check for one dollar and a pic of me with said deer with a note that simply stated "suck it"!
