We've only put in for wister Saturdays .. can't afford anything else. This is my son's 1st draw his buddy has 2 and his other buddy got 2. They're learning how to hunt the refuge etc... one of the boys got his 1st duck. To me it's about the boys hunting. .. I get to do all the work
I've stopped pissing and moaning the system. For what ever reason I do believe they run in cycles. Zero or one for an entire year. Or two and then 5 or 6 in another. Like many I put in for all Wed and Sat at both our SoCal Refuges. When the kids were Juniors I did believe they drew more frequently. I wish I got more great resi.s but still enjoy getting out. The sweatline has grown and the chance to get a site you want or even get on at San Jac is worse. My personal luck in the draw at Wister is dismal. 25 cards or 35 and I am within 3 of the bottom. Everytime !! When the pics are the same number as the card numbers that seems fishy?? OK, I am pissing and moaning now. I'll quit. My dog and me are goin' huntin' Wednesday. Somewhere. Old Quack 49
I feel like it is random but random doesn't mean consistency. For example go to casino and watch a roulette table, it's not going to come up red, black, red, black. You are going to have dry spells with ressies and your going to have times when you get several back to back. It is much harder these days with the way you can put in for ressies though cause many more people are putting in for them. You don't have to have a ressie to hunt though. If you don't count Sunday's I believe there's been 17 hunt days. I've been at a refuge every one of those hunt days and five of those times I was on a ressie and only one of which was mine. So I have sweatlined 12 times this season and everytime I have been in sweat line I draw in the bottom half. I'm not saying I'm a big time killer by any means but I do alright for myself and have had some pretty epic hunts on sweatline and refill. Successful hunting is all about putting in the time and making it happen for yourself and adapting to things. I hear a lot of guys talk about how they don't have time and what not. If you don't have time than its not a high priority to you. Everyone of those hunt days I was scouting the day before, watching not only where the birds where but how they were sitting on each spot and what type of birds it was. Get out there and make it happen for yourself.
The 5-10% avg for resi's seems to be holding true for us so far this year...I have been drawn twice and my son 3x. My theory is that the youth get a certain %age of the resi's and therefore have a better chance...
A big shout out to DOG ON POINT, who has converted me and my 14 year old son to duck hunting the last few years. After our less than stellar hunt last Saturday, he turned and said to me "I love duck hunting and could live out here during the season."
