I lost Gunner last week, he was 13 years old. He had not been eating very well, was throwing up occasionally, and loosing weight. I noticed his abdomen seemed swollen and tight. Turns out he had a large mass inside, so I did my best to make his last days comfortable and comforting. He quit eating, became very weak and unsteady on his feet, and just wanted to lay down on his dog bed. I had to put him down...it was a rough day.

Like all of us with hunting dogs, I was blessed with so many great days in the field hunting together. We had that bond, we understood each other. When the boots went on, and the kennel was loaded in the bed of the truck, he was as happy and excited to go hunting as I was.

I miss him, hunting without him wont be the same...RIP Gunner

A great solo hunt deep in the hills in the high desert! I found this spot and never hunted it with anyone. It was our secret spot!

Sorry to hear this Dave. I share your pain, most of us do. Losing our hunting companion is awful. You gave Gunner a great life, doing what he was born to do.Its a small comfort for a huge loss, but worth remembering just the same. I you could ask him, I'm sure he would say he wouldn't have wanted live his life with anyone else.

Rest in Peace Gunner.

Thank u all for ur condolences.

I provided a good life and opportunity for Gunner to be a bird dog, and in return he gave me his unwavering loyalty and drive.

RIP to Gunner and godspeed to you and yours.

What breed was Gunner? Looked like a pretty versatile buddy you had there.
Gunner was a purebred AKC German Shorthair Pointer. The solid liver is from the Greif blood line. He came from breeding's of Larry Lowell's dogs. I fostered him at 4 months of age from a guy who went thru a divorce and could not keep him.

We hunted Quail, Dove, Pheasant, and Chukar. A few times we hunted ducks jump shooting, he had no trouble with water retrieves. A very versatile dog like most GSP's.
