Looking for new binos, suggestions please

I'm soon going to be in the market for some new binos. I currently have some 10x42 Leupolds that are decent but was thinking of going to some 12x50's. My budget is around $600. If anyone has recommendations on a make/model I'd love to hear them. Also would like your thoughts on the 12x50 vs 10x42.

I love my Cabelas Euro's, slightly above your price range (as I recall). I originally had the Cabelas Alaskan Guide 10x42 for 10 plus years and they were great as well. Busted an eye cup after 10 years and they gave me full replacement value and I upgraded to the Euro's as my old man had them.

10x42 is plenty magnification for me. I can put them on a tripod and tear apart anything within a mile or more clearly. I wouldn't go higher mag personally...

There are some serious veteran classers on this forum. They will give good info. But, the most serious glassers are paying $2k for their glass.

Depends on your style of hunting. I can't imagine not having a 10x42 on a bino strap. Also, if you are glassing for deer from 0 to 3 miles, you should have 15x on a tripod. If you can't sit still long enough to class off a tripod, you should have at least a 10x42 around your neck. I can't think of a reason for having a 12x50. Too heavy to wear all day.

As for brands, the good stuff is $2k. After that, I have heard good feedback on the Euros and Vortex.

Sounds like you want to use the higher magnification binos as your "primary" set. I personally wouldn't do that unless you plan on using them with a tripod the majority of the time. This is especially true if your budget is limited to $600. Big glass at that pirce point is likely to be difficult to glass for long periods of time, especially without the use of a tripod.

If 90% of the time they will be hand held (you are wearing them), I would stick with the 10x42. Nothing wrong with used, if you can find them. Most good companies have good warranties even if you are not original purchaser. May be able to find some European glass used on ebay in price range, or have heard good things about Vortex.

They'll be neck hangers for archery hunting so based on your input I reckon I'll stick with 10x42's. My budget is 600 but I'd go to 800 for a really good deal.

Im getting ready to throw some cash down on vortex..... just trying to make up my mind on the Razors or Vipers .... they are also coming out with a range finder / bino combo that's due out in June.

Here is a question for you glassing experts..... if you were going to toss $1300 on binos what would you go with?

10x42 as the 10x50 are heavier and studies I have read studies that show that our eyes cannot actually utilize the extra light coming through on a 50 compared to a 42, that is why bino companies came out with the 42.


$1300..hmm...used Swaro SLC HD or new Razor or Meopta (cabelas Euro). But go to cabelas and look through the razor and the euro as they are different and you may favor one over the other.

That is great glass. Ray reminded me that you should call cameraland, they have some great deals on Demos. Also try riflescopes.com. Call and I think the guys name is Dennis. They may have some good deals also.

Cameraland will often give an additional 10 percent off for non-demo products. You just have to ask for it. It may be worth even asking for 10 percent off the demo price.
