Excited to be hunting with my daughter this weekend for her first hunting trip where she's actually hunting. Like many of you happy dads and moms, this is a great way to expose the sport we love so much to the next generation. It's also a time when we proud parents look to keep these memories in the way of taxidermy. Birds are in prime plumage and if ever a trophy bird were to be taken, it would be now. If you do choose to save a bird for your taxidermist, here's a few tips to help ensure you keep your possible mount in best condition. If bird is still alive, don't ring the neck or finish with the nail in the head trick. You can put fist in mid back of bird and hold down tightly till it expires. Even compressing wins to body and drowning bird will work. Hand retrieve bird--- no dogs!! Keep bird out of pile and out of direct sunlight. After hunt, freeze bird asap. You can wash dirt and blood before storage. I place birds head on back and place in a 2 gal. Ziplock bag. Try to get all the air out. And be realistic--we are taxidermist. Not miracle workers.
