Okay here's a question we all have to ask ourselves. Are you going to take a jake or hold out for that big tom??

As I recall, it is anything with a beard visible through the feathers. Now I assume that is with the naked eye, or perhaps some 60x spectacles....

If I see a single strand, POW!

First one with a beard goes "bang"!

There is a natural progression to most fisherman/hunters.

*at first, you just want to catch/harvest anything
*then you want to catch/harvest limits
*then you want to catch/harvest a trophy
*then you want to catch/harvest it the way you want to catch/harvest it

Public land = First thing with a beard I can make out with the 10x bino's!

that said, a typical year we (brother, cousin, and myself) will take 1-2 toms and 2-3 jakes.

I agree on your progression of a hunter................ :D

When I first started turkey hunting it was all on public land............. Always tough, I was tickled pink just to get a turkey each year and some of my most memorable hunts were shooting jakes.

Now, I pretty much hold off for older toms. The excitement felt having a gobbler coming in has never changed though....... Jake or longbeard.

Where the progression of hunting is taking me now is I enjoy watching others (especially kids) pull the trigger as much as bagging a bird myself.......... :2:

I agree with Sprig. I've had jakes run me over when I do a little kee kee run. I'm holding out for the big toms too. I'll let the wife and my other young hunter shoot what they want as long as they are sure.

For me, big mature toms have been tough to find on public property. If its got a beard its dying! :2zho0zs_th: If I get one in the bag, I'll try for a mature bird for the second bird.

All kinding aside, I get more enjoyment out of my kids killing stuff then I get doing it myself. My middle boy enjoys bird hunting more than hog hunting and will be taking him out and see what he get. if its got hair we are gonna air it out.

Last year I took my 1st tom with a shotgun. This year I will be hunting with my virgin bow that has not stuck anything but a target. So with that said I am going to take what ever walks my way that has a beard. I am going to stick one big or small unless it is really small then I will come back for it next year!
