I have a tule cow hide I want to tan, has anyone done it at home? I'd like it nice and supple and am pretty much convinced I need to have it done professionally, but was hoping someone tells me otherwise.

Holler...

I've wet tanned hides for shoulder mounts. What you're trying to do requires specialized equipment like a fleshing machine, tumbler... My advice would be to have it done at a tannery. Either ship it to me and I'll send it off for you or I can tell you what you need to do to ship it off. Ed F

Send it to Golden State tannery. It's a fraction of the cost of a taxidermist. You can mail a salted hide, but call them first. Not sure if you get your original hide back from tanneries, though. Worth a call.

I use Golden State for my wet tans and Wildlife Fur Dressings for my dry tans. Both are in the Fresno area. Just don't send them a Mountain lion... I did... they weren't happy about it. Ed F

Thanks for the vote of confidence prick! Ha! Yeah I won't screw around with this guy, but I might try a yote soon just for my own tinkering. I hope to have a pacific mulebuck hide in the next two weeks too!

Tanning them is easy. Breaking the hide afterward is a separate step though. And apparently for pros... they use a tumbler to do so. On YouTube you can find a bunch vids on what ya gotta do to Break the hide... it's lengthy, involved and looks like a lot of manual work.

Once you've gotten the hides tanned. They can wait around indefinitely until you finally get the time to then move on to "Breaking" the hide.

This is going into the wayback machine, but anyone remember Songdog(Jonathon) from the good ol days? That guy used to tan hides all the time.
Anywho, if anyone in SoCal knows him, I'd talk to him.
