Those were the Grass Carp variety, which are actually Pets of the Irrigation district, so they are protected. But they are a hoot to catch.
I only ate one in my life. A lady smoked it for me, and it was excellent. I might try to do one some day, but cleaning and cooking the traditional way is not happening.

He did get a bluegill today, but this was the big score.
I think I was 30 years old when I caught my first bass that big.
