I usually keep it short and sweet..right to the money shots ..with no fluff..but this hunt deserves some key board time. Took the dudes out to the secret spot over the weekend, 4miles in..4miles out, flashlights, backpacks, water , and rifle..in the desert, you better be willing to put some boot leather on,as there is no such thing as a truck buck when hunting coues where we are at. All 3 boys drew tags for this zone .{.I did not draw alice dyck as usual...}.that being said, it sure is nice to just carry a set of binos and a walking stick these days..i literally don't do anything..just walk..and stand there..and walk some more..and stand there..HA! We hit the game trail at 0430..had to be at a pinch point before first light{ that's a crossing where several draws connect in a saddle for the duckers reading}.We make it to where we wanna be with plenty of time to spare, it use to be like a herd of cows walking with these boys...now its like walking with cats..silent assassins. We get set up and wait for magic hour to approach, sunrise in the desert is something to experience for those who have not..true beauty, everyone is behind the glass. We sit for no more than about an hour and then it happens, #2 whispers" I got 2 bucks coming up from the drainage" #1 and #3 say.."got um" I say..where? #1.#2.and #3 try to get me on the bucks thru the glass for what seemed like hours..i still say..where? now im getting the side eye looks from all 3 of them..the looks I use to give my dad..like the look of "god he is old, blind and fat" Anyways..finally I see them, they are picking their way up thru the rocks cross canyon,,now the back story on who shoots first when you 3 boys with tags is as follows, the night before..we have a cage match in the living room.you can be choked out..or you can tap..#2 won as he beat #1 with a rear naked choke..i had to intervene as #1 was not going to tap as was looking blue and limp by the time I pulled #2 off..then #2 and #3 went at it for top dog..#3 had the advantage at first as #2 was tired,,but he made a fatal mistake and let #2 get his back,,and that was she wrote..#3 wisely tapped..and so the shooting order was established ..#2 being top dog would go first,,and since #1 was first to shoot a javelina last weekend..#3 would shoot second if the opportunity presented. So, now I finally get to do something.. I pull out the lieca and range them, 450. I say to #2..you got this? I get side eyed again with no comment. he takes the turret cap off of the sightron 6-20x..turns the turret to 4.5 and gets behind the Remington 700 sendero in 300win mag.chambers the 210 grain lead round..and takes breath. I feel my heart beating out of my chest..im shaking like a blind queer at a weenie roast as I sit behind the glass waiting for the report of the rifle..just about them..KAPOOW!! SMACK!! down goes buck #1 ..like boom smack drop not even a ear twitch type dead..like dead dead. I give a whoo hoo!! #3 yells at me to be quiet as the other buck is still standing there{as they often do} wondering wtf happened to my buddy? #2 and #3 quickly switch postions and # gets behind the meat stick..by this time the other buck had moved up the draw about 50 yds,,I let #3 know and makes the appropriate adjustment on the sightron to 500...he then whispers,,"dad..im gonna send it" im like..go for it..im on him thru the glass...I hear the safety click off and I new it was fixin to go down,,,a deep breath and an exhale..and...KAPOOW!! SCHWACK!!! I see a rock explode behind the buck and instantly turn red!! the buck jumps and starts doing the slow walk ..picking his way down the rock bluff..just about the time #3 chambers another round..the buck starts cart wheeling down the draw..{this terrain these little gray ghosts live in is no joke,,menacing" . Now the the hollering starts and high fives and back slaps..i go in for man hugs,,and get the chect bumps instead,,i least I tried and will continue to try for hugs from my boys..L.O.L!! the boys beat me over to their bucks by 30 minutes or so..there is no walking right over to these bucks in the desert..everything is a slow process{for me anyways}. The following pics are of their first ever Coues deer..im pretty sure there will be many more in the future,,between their javelina last weekend these bucks this weekend..and an elk hunt next weekend out of flagstaff..we are covered on protein for a bit I think..Oh as for #1..well, we spent 2.5 more days hiking and glassing..hiking and glassing..turned up about 15 more does and 3 spikes{which are legal here in AZ} but #1 did the right thing and walked them as we had already murdered 2 bucks and did not need to shoot a youngster this time out. 2 out of 3 was just fine with him....Memorys like this I,ll take to the grave..this truly was a special hunt, second only to my daughters first buck...Keep um close fellas..they turn into men way to quick..ouch...

Didn’t take you long to figure out this desert stuff.... now you just need to start slaying those giant desert mule deer! AZ grows them extra large!!!!

I don't know duckie.. these little 85 lb desert Whitey's have struck a new interest in me..by far the most elusive yet..we did see some good muleys out there though..but the boys drew coues tags only...had they drawn the junior hunt which was last week..it would have been any buck..in which case #1 would have shot a dandy mule buck..from the truck even!! Ha!
