where I hunt in Co is between 6800 to 14000.
this is what I do,

#1. I show up 3 days early before anything ells happens.
I go up in the truck and scout only with my spotting scope from the truck. each day i up my energy out put. as soon as I fill even the lightest headache . I stop and rest drink water. take 2 advil, fest and then go back to the truck.. I do this for 3 days. each day I can go a little father then the day before.
then the day of the opener I give myself 3 hrs to hike 2 mile as a crow flies and a purity easy hike tell the last 1/4. your head will be pounding because of the energy that you use. stop and rest, hell you have 3 hrs. every year I have a new first time and every year they make it. we do that hike the first two days. buy then they I have had one person have a problem after that.

If only Kirk would get off the keyboard and run some, he'd know some stuff... He AS, 5K's in HS don't count for running experience...
Running? I once did over 32 5K's in 23 hours all in the mountains from Squaw Valley to Auburn. But I'm since retired, except for that race I did last month. I heart running!

I hear he only does it because he loves the runners high....

If it wasn't in a suffocation mask it didn't count. But at least you didn't poison your body with beer after, right?

I think Kim picked out Paul's mask....just sayin'.

I live @ 7500' & still get acclimated before if I am hunting high.
I lived @ sea level & used to climb all over Sierras to 14k.I always spent a day or 2 @ 7-8k 1st.
Only got sick once @ 14k & had to get down fast. It was real bad.
Got it again on Kaiser Pk about 12 yrs ago and hiking back to the cabin @ 7200' got rid of the migrane & sickness after drinking a couple gallons of water, aspirin & rest.I sat at the lake & fished the next day & was fine.
I take the Tumms with me still for cramps & . NM hot chile.....
