Conquest scents - EverCalm.
They harvest it from the bedding area of farm-raised deer. It's in a speed-stick kind of applicator. I smear some onto the toes of my boots before the hike in. It's supposed to make them more at ease.
I'll just say this... I'm still fairly new to hunting, but... I have been successful 3 years in a row now at short distances. 2 with rifle, 1 with bow. So yeah... sure... maybe there's some stuff I'm doing right... but I'm betting I ain't that good, so I figure it has helped.
A big, no check-that HUGE part of the success is picking a good location, being extremely in-tune and mindful of the wind... and remaining very still for LONG periods of time. And remaining in the shadows and having vegetation behind you to break-up your outline.
However, I try really hard to be super aware of my scent-control and every aspect of my gear and the inside of my car and have a better than average nose for odors. I've seen first-hand how deer will run away like the devil himself was chasing them if they smell a dog's scent on something. And I have two smaller dogs so I'm very on top of that aspect within my car. I'll try to clean the upholstery and not like them back in the vehicle during hunting time.
For sure I will say that you need to get a PEET's Boot Dryer. Without the PEET's the inside of my boots always had an amount of stink even after washing them, even with using Dawn Platinum! But something about the use of that Boot Dryer kills off the bacteria or something. Passes the nose test when you stuff your shnozz deep inside your boots afterward, whereas before you could always smell the left behind odor of the stink. Nobody needs to be fighting against that dead give-away.
Also... get in the habit of adding Baking Soda into your wash of your hunting clothes!!! It totally makes a difference to my nose, so I figure it has to help somewhat with a deers even better nose, I'd imagine.
Also I have to believe that a person should hold out as long as I can on eating when in the field. Watch your dog the next time you take him on a walk. If there is a scent on something they are curious about the first thing they do is wet it by licking it and re-sniff it. Just like what happens all over the inside of your mouth when you eat stuff. I know I've been in places like the supermarket when someone is eating certain foods several aisles over and it stinks like hell and feels like my nose just wants to dive back into my face from the stink (especially when somebody is eating cornnuts, as an example, Yuck!).
Big thing is movement! Teach your boy that if he feels he needs to turn his head to look over a certain direction... that he must do soo uber slowly. It should take like 6 to 7 seconds to rotate his head 90 degrees.
Also I'd recommend watching the BowNinja's videos on YouTube. Very straight-forward, easy to understand, makes sense, advice.
And personally I'd recommend getting your son a mesh neck gaitor. Helps slightly hold-in the scent of your breathes and better yet helps cover most of your face from flying insects. With the mesh gator... and the 3D leafy boonie hat pulled-down over the tops of my ears.... and my glasses... I now can usually forego using the ThermaCell device to shoo away flying insects. Seems like it's when you move that they key-in on you. But as long as I remain fairly still... with my 3D leafy stuff all over. It sure seems like the 3D leafy stuff sorta has this shoo-ing affect on the bugs, from what I can tell.
PS chances are you're too late to implement all this various external help at this point. So for now, just work on being mindful of the wind direction and working with your son at getting better at dealing with the flying insects and remaining still.
Oh... and big thing.. you GOTTA get in there early before the sun comes up! And/or stay until the last bit of light in the PM. Otherwise chances are very high you ain't gon' see doodoo.
Here's hoping you get to make great memories with your boy!
