6 years? How many are in your group? I thought you can draw that tag every 3-4 years? At least I did. Good grief. Between donating money to multiple state F$G agencies for not, I may have to take up a domesticated sport like golf. Come on AZ. Anyways good luck up there. I just got back from mammoth. Spent a few days cruising areas I found last year, Although DFW says the winter was tough we seen a lot of buck. Have fun.

We're a group of three. My brother was up there last week and was camping in French Camp. He hiked into Gem Lakes and was going to do an over-niter there but said there was so much snow there wasn't anywhere to set up camp. He had a reservation for East Fork campground but they refunded his money as they couldn't open in time. He said that he saw a lot of deer and even saw elk. He's been doing a bit of scouting up there for our hunt.

in 2004 my buddy told me he gets drawn every 3 years, so in 2007 was my first trip up there.  Then my next draw 2012 and I had 4 points.... Since then I tired with 3 points and didnt get drawn so I bought points this year, cause I dont see going up there until my son Graduates HS in 3 more years... Football season ...

I saw rumor that they might change the quota... I should have enough points...

Good luck up there. My buddy who lives in mammoth has been seeing a lot of deer and from the pictures he sends me the bucks are looking healthy.

Finally got a draw after 6 years.   Use to work up in the area periodically during the 1980's.  Saw a couple of 4 by 4's while camping and fishing along Rock Creek.  Lots of buck prints.  My older brother saw a huge elk on discharge side of Rock Creek Lake, first elk I have ever seen.  Hope the hunting is as well rewarded this fall. Looking forward to hunting X9-A with my brother and nephew, at last!  Happy days!

Just south of Tom's Place is one thing......Plenty around the split of Hwy 395 & Hwy 6.......Less than 20 miles away.

I've seen a couple cows around Swall meadows, but never heard of anything up the canyon toward Rock creek. Its possible, if a couple elk wondered up through Pine creek, straight up Sand canyon & over Wheeler ridge. They would have only traveled about 7 or 8 miles.

What was found last week by Rock creek was a body. A couple going for a day hike got caught in a rain storm & headed for cover. They found a small cave right off the trail. Inside were the remains of some dude who went out with a pint of whiskey in his hand.

As far as the deer, kind of hard to pull a tag after they have been cut in half. It will take 5 or 6 years to get an archery tag if the quota stays at 30.

That's some beautiful country above Rock Creek lake.  Great hiking, especially as you get up past ~11k feet elevation.  I would not recommend doing it with only a pint of whisky.
