Actually, no. This is my smallest buck ever. But, I had an epic hunt and I felt like sharing. Paul's bad-ass mountain goat hunt in Montana made me wanna write this up, but I don't have a once-in-a-lifetime trophy. But, I did have a memorable hunt.

I rolled up to Northern Cali and hunted a wilderness area. I had been there the opener with my boys, but I didn't tag one and we came home late Monday. By Tuesday I was at work, but I felt that I had unfinished business in the wilderness. No one could come with me, so I was barreling through by myself and a day and a half to get it done...or not.

I slept at the trailhead by 3 a.m. and headed up a different trail to get a different angle of attack on this buck. Well, this trail was steeper and longer and by the time Saturday was over, I had hiked about 16 miles and gained/lost about 11k in elevation, but I put the smackdown on this Hatchet-approved mammal.

Okay, why did I kill this little dude when I was after a fatty? There were several reasons (tired, low on water, dog ate my homework) but I let my vanity get the best of me. I had a GoPro to capture my hunt, it was a cool shot and by the time I dusted him, I only had 20 hours left before I had to turn and burn. Did I mention I had not yet recovered from opening weekend and I humped in a steeper, longer trail?

I caught him while still-hunting. He and 2 similar-sized homeboys were together, although I didn't see them until after I dumped this guy. It was cool though, I came over a rock outcropping, looked down the cliff, saw this dude walking to a big-ass dead tree and squat to dump. I was looking at him dump, but after all of the other reasons I mentioned, plus the fact my GoPro was on, I was debating heavily. When he turned, looked up and finally notice me, I changed my mind and KAPOW! He was dead at the shot and rolled 294 yards. He was crapping in the shadow.

What's kinda funny is that when I reviewed my video, I'm apologizing, "I had to homey, I had to..." If I did not have the camera rolling, he would not have been a target, just b-roll for the video. I didn't even bother looking for the big boy because no way in hell I was making 2 trips.

You can't really see, but he's rolling down in this picture, below the tree, right hand side under the grey deadfall. Not a good picture, but okay video I guess.

Anyway, my better half hates it when I hunt by myself in the wilderness for obvious reasons. It didn't help when I told her I heard a lion kill a deer. I don't know if it was a buck or doe, but a hooved animal got smoked. From about 800 yards or so away, I heard hooves on rocks (made me look, I love hearing that!) but then I heard a muffled deer call, some lion screams, then silence. I ran towards the rocky open area where I thought it was coming from, but it was over quickly and I had a full-sized backpack on the whole time. I walked for about 80 yards (ugly trail) and then stopped and sat to glass to see if I could verify what my ears had told me just happened. After about 5-10 minutes of glassing, I went back to hunting. This is where the action occurred.

Sounds like an adventure, and a great write up also.

Thanks Paul, not quite what you and the boy did, but when I read your hunt, I could definitely identify. Anyway, thanks.

Snoop, we have eaten 2 deer tags since then and in the middle of our 3rd.  We are on a Coues hunt in AZ right now, and the weather is shutting us down.  Feeling jinxed on deer this year.  It is all about the memory.
