Planning a return trip to Adak for this fall before the snow hits. My friend has a full plate with medical mission trips to the Philippines, China, and Uganda, so he can't make it. I'm willing to go it alone but would rather have a like-minded backpack hunter to come along with me. Going to backpack in away from the roads for caribou and then shoot a few ducks from the road system after the bou is in the bag.

Dates are flexible and determined by the draws in the lower 48. If I draw goose eggs across the board I'm thinking early November. This will be a backpacking hunt, not car camping. Anyone interested ?

Sounds fun, maybe in a couple years.

That's really funny !......the old lady greeting people in Walmart makes more than me. I'm just frugal and know how to do it cheap. Get an Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card and you automatically get 25,000 miles. It only takes 25,000 miles to get a free roundtrip ticket from San Diego to Adak.

This is definitely a trip I'd like to do. How long of trip are you planning? Do you plan on driving as far as possible, then packing in? Or do you have boat connections?

The wilderness area starts not too far from town. A truck will cost $100 per day and to park it at a trailhead for a week does not make $ense. I could probably hire a ride to the trailhead or else walk there. Boats are unpredictable because of the frequent high winds. Counting on a boat to get you there or pick you up would be a gamble.
Flights to/from Adak are only on Thursdays and Sundays. So 1 week would be minimal and 10 days ideal.
On my recent trip I took a couple of inflatable kayaks for waterfowl hunting.

When it's all said and done , what does a DIY bou hunt cost? It sounds like it would be a great experience.

Yikes $1,200 from HNL to ADK for the round trip ticket.  How much does the hunt normally set you back (aside from the ticket)?

Get the AK airlines Visa Signature card and you automatically receive 25,000 miles. That's enough points for a free roundtrip to Adak. AK airlines has direct flights from Kona to Anchorage.
I see you're from Kailua....Kona or Oahu ? either way they have flights from both Kona and Honolulu.

After free air.....if you are backpacking it cost nothing but an Aleut Corp. land use fee...$10 per day, $30 per week, or $50 a year.
Non-Res hunt lic $85...caribou tag $325
So you see, after the free airfare it don't cost much at all if you are backpacking. Now if you hunt from the road system and rent a house....we did this for 10 days while duck hunting in January...it cost the 2 of us $1,000 each for 10 days, house and truck.

ps. If you plan on coming to the mainland often...you really should get this card, or at the very least sign up for their free mileage program...cost nothing and after 5 roundtrips to the mainland you would have earned those 25,000 points.

Kailua, Oahu.  My girl's family lives in Delta Junction, so there's a good chance we will be flying up there every so often anyway.  I guess the card couldn't hurt.  With only 2 years left in the Navy I don't plan on flying back to the mainland too many times.  The tickets are just way too expensive to fly 3 people back and forth all the time.  I would love to go, but my girl only gives it a "slim" chance.  Remind me again why I decided a relationship was a good idea...  Are you archery or rifle hunting?

Kalvin...even if you don't get the card, at least sign up for the free mileage program. Cost you nothing and after 5 roundtrips you'll have enough for a free AK trip. My wife doesn't have a card and after our next trip to Kauai in May she'll have 10,000 + miles. Soon she'll have a free trip to AK too. She wants to go but not in the winter, don't know why. :smiley-wnk-yellow:
