I don't know how many of you had the privilege meeting or knowing Joel, but Sprig (Steve Trig) sent an email this morning that Joel had been killed in an accident in Mesa Grande yesterday.  Joel and his parents, Frank and Janice Mendenhall own and operate the beautiful Mendenhall Ranch up on Mount Palomar, The Lake Henshaw Resort and My Country Club ("MCC")

Here is Steve's email:

I write this with a heavy heart. I got news a little while ago that Joel Mendenhall was killed in Mesa Grande this afternoon........Joel was a great kid, loved his 3 girls, wife, and worked hard on his cattle company. Please send prayers to his wife Jenna, the girls, his parents, Frank, Janice, and all family members.

Apparently it was an accident involving heavy equipment.  I can't say I knew Joel well, but I did have the privilege of meeting him on several occasions as well as his parents, Frank and Janice, initially at the TOF campout and BBQ  at Lake Henshaw and again when they were kind enough to allow my Deutsch Kurzhaar club to hold one of our breed tests on their ranch. They are a lovely family and I was impressed especially with Joel and his Homegrown Cattle Company which supplies the organic grass fed beef  to Whole Foods Market. He was very accomplished for someone so young and to see such a promising life cut short is a tragedy.  I hope you'll say a prayer for Joel, his wife and children and his parents and family. I can't imagine the loss and grief they are feeling right now.

"One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it's still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards."

I had the pleasure of calling Joel a friend, he would stop what ever he was doing to help or offer advice. He was a loving husband, father and son. To Jenna and the kids, Frank and Janice, Gary and Cindy our thoughts and prayers go out to you. I'm not done shedding tears over his loss and may never stop. He will be missed beyond words or thoughts. He truly was an amazing man that held family as his true being. My heart is breaking.

The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."

That is a tough one. Great family. Very well known up in the Palomar and Mesa Grande area. I will certainly say a prayer for the family. For those of you close to the Mendenhalls, I am sorry for your loss as well.
