on both of my overnight trips this year I woke up at night with a bad leg cramp.

while hiking out over the weekend my foot slipped and my leg immediatly cramped up and started to spasm.

wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them or know of a way to prevent it from happening? Never really had an issue before.

(I am well hydrated despite the very hot temps and usually have a few gatorades or propels throughout the day with emergen-c packets in them)

Low hydration, potassium, salt and electrolytes. I just finished 100 miles backpacking in July... not one cramp and I usually get plagued with them. I just paid attention to those 4 things and never had one. Worked for me. Ed F

Nothing worst than being sound asleep waking up with a calf cramp. Leg cramps suck!!!! and the muscles hurt for the next 3 days.

As Ed said, electrolytes! You're not getting enough from Gatorade (sugar water) and propel.

soo....an emergen C packet a day would not be enough? I know what your body does not use in the short term gets discharged out, but usually don't drink them until mid day.

what would be good to supplement my day with so this doesn't happen again?

Like Hatch said  get the blood work done  and talk to yer doc. You should have full panel of blood work done yearly.  Its the smart play. Of course the digital exam would be optional depending on yer age :smiley-moon-face-yellow:

I get them and it is almost always hydration or eating to much before going to bed and not drinking enough fluids.

Also, if it is lots of up hills and maybe you were doing different type of training, that will get you also.  Blood work sounds like a good idea.  Need it done myself one of these days.

My wife has a liver condition that causes leg cramps (like nothing you have seen) it brings her to tears she has two good friends that our RN's and they told her about a medicine called Leg Cramps it's sold over the counter at Costco and Wal Mart their is 2 diffrent ones one is short term relief right away you take 3-4 small tabs and put them under your tonge to disolve with in 3-4 min cramps start to go away, the other is a larger tab that you take in the morning.

You can also drink tonic water because it has quinine in it.

Trust me these things work
